The first official document testifying to the existence of Château la Nerthe (then known as the Grange de Beauvenir) records its purchase on November 25, 1560 by the Tulle de Villefranche family. Under their influence, the wines of La Nerthe reached a high level of quality and attained a certain celebrity. Thus, from the 18th century on, notable personalities including the Maréchal de Tonnerre and Maréchal de Brissac, the Dukes of Uzès and Chevreuse, and the Prince of Bergues praised "the excellent wines of La Nerthe" and consumed them with pleasure. The domaine's wines were also served at the court of Louis XVI in Versailles.
